Jenica Henry Honors English22-001 Dr. Ross Wheeler Paper1 Draft 1 The Way of the World is a comedy of manners in five acts by William Congreve. Performed and published in 1700 the play ridicules the assumptions that governed the society of his time, especially those concerning love and marriage. The plot concerns the efforts of the lovers Millamant and Mirabell to obtain the permission of Millamant's aunt, Lady Wishfort, for their marriage. Despite a scheme that goes wrong and after several misunderstandings are cleared up, the two finally obtain her consent. This essay will discuss the actions of Mrs. Marwood. Though she is a minor character, her motives in the play lead her to help in the distruction of Mirabell's scheme. In the second act we find that Mrs. Fainall and Mrs. Marwood both hate men. As they begin to conspire, we see Marwood's manipulative abilities going to work, convincing Mrs. Fainall that she should divorce her husband. In Public the Fainall's seem to get along, they even seem to be able to tolerate one another. However, following their short interactions, both husband and wife go off with a lover, either past or present. Fainall went off with Mrs. Marwood, the woman he loves, and Mrs. Fainall went off with Mirabell, one of her long time lovers before her marriage. This pairing off did not truly bother either of the Fainall's in that since niether loved the other, they did not feel loyal to each other. Their marrage was based solely on image and in no way love. Therefore they did not feel guilty about being with the person they loved most in the world. Through these conversations, the plot to wed Mirabell and Millamant is revealed to the audience. This seems to be a long and intricate plan with a lot of things depending on the reactions of Lady Wishfort and the secrecy of the plot. Unfortunately, Mrs. Marwood sees Foible conversing with Mirabell and for a moment, all seems lost, but Foible convinces Lady Wishfort that she did not speak to Mirabell volutarily and that he coerced her into speaking with him. She also told Lady Wishfort that Mirabell had insulted her, which made Lady Wishfort extremely mad and so she desired to seek revenge on such a bold and stubborn man. She was willing to do almost anything to keep Mirabell from inheriting his uncle's fortune, even go so far as to marry the unknown uncle herself. Ironically, the plan is almost foiled again when Mrs. Marwood overhears the entire plan as Mrs. Fainall speaks with Foible. In order to work against the plot without directly coming out and uncovering it, Marwood plants opposing thoughts into the mind of Lady Wishfort, and so in this way, undermining the efforts of Mirabell and Foible. Mrs. Marwoods intention are to help Fainall extort money out of Lady Wishfort. In addition to advising Lady Wishfort, Marwood plans to use Fainall to get back at Lady Wishfort, Millamant, and Mirabell. She writes a letter that reveals to Lady Wishfort the entire plan including Waitwell's impersonation of Sir Rowland, and even Millamants involvement with the unapproved contract. However, during this time, Lady Wishfort is encourageing Millamant to become involved with Sir Wilfull, but Millamant is only interested in Mirabell. Finally, Lady Wishfort is courted by Sir Rowland, all is going well until the letter arrives. When Lady Wishfort reads the letter, she is confused and shocked at first. Waitwell tries to justify the letter and so offers to prove his identity as Sir Rowland. However, since Fainall knew about Marwood's plan to use the letter, he was waiting to arrest Waitwell. Lady Wishfort in turn was scolding Foible and proceeded to basically throw her out of her home. Over the next few moments, all of the inter-relationships that had been hidden throughout the play were uncovered as Fainall attempted to legally pressure Lady Wishfort into turning over her fortune to her daughter and therefore giving the money to him. Without fail, Mirabell comes to the rescue with a legal document that turns over all moneys to himself, signed and witnessed by persons who were present. So in the end, Mirabell is allowed to marry Millamant as a reward for saving Lady Wishfort's fortunes. This play was very interesting and difficult to understand in the beginning, but as the plot began to unfold and the relationships began to be discovered, the story was a little more understandable. These are not underground cult films, but rather highly stylized and artistically edited depictions of all genres. Jing's Naked Killer falls under the category of detective thriller/femme fatale (even though the film has less to do with detectives as it does with lesbian love affairs). The film is full of bright and broad primary colors, from Kitty's numerous outfits to Sister Cindys interesting house. Octavia Butler's Kindred vs. Harriet Jacobs' Incidents In The Life of a Slave Girl According to 'the conventions for slave narratives', it is possible to categorize Kindred by Octavia Butler as a slave narrative. However, the circumstances that take Dana back in time are imaginative and fantastical compared to slave narratives such as Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs. While reading Kindred, one doesn't really get the experience of the slaves, but how Dana feels as she participates in slave times. Compared to the lives of slaves, her life is much easier and she has the luxury of knowing she is not and never was a slave. In contrast, Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl is a direct portrayal of slavery through the eyes of a slave. Although the viewpoints are very different, there are similarities in their experiences and in the way each responds and fights for their freedom. The first parallel exists in how both Dana and Jacobs are taught to view themselves. Jacobs states, ? I was born a slave; but never knew it till six years of happy childhood had passed away? (Jacobs 7). Jacobs? father allowed her the freedom to grow up happy and unfettered by slavery. Once she did realize she was a slave, her mistress further encouraged independent thought with kind treatment and by teaching Jacobs to read. Therefore Jacobs had little worries about slavery for the first twelve years of her life. Dana grew up in 20th century America, where life for African-Americans is drastically changed. She never had to worry about slavery nor gave it much thought beyond what she read in books or learned in classes. She is even married to a white man. As stated earlier, Jacobs and Dana experience slavery from very different perspectives. Dana is well educated and prior to going back in time, has only read about slavery, while Jacobs, although literate, is born into slavery and knows nothing else. Yet these major differences do not change the veneer of slavery. Both are considered property and both had to endure and watch others endure unimaginable cruelties. Contemporary society is continually informed of advances in technology, be they in biology, agriculture, education, or nearly any other discipline or aspect of life. It appears technology is directly or indirectly linked to all recent progress. Certainly, many of the daily activities in which humans engage (reading a newspaper, making coffee, commuting to work, etc. ) require technological devices. With the apparently increased reliance on and development of technology, it seems prudent to consider the consequences inherent in the use and evolution of it. More specifically, one must examine the extent to which humans–the creators of technology, will become redundant in a society in which machines and the tasks they perform are incapable of being extracted from daily routines. As with nearly all issues, the development of technology is advocated by many while it is strongly opposed by others. Regarding the former, one must not search far for arguments favoring technological progress. Proponents, particularly those favoring medical advances, eagerly enumerate the positive outcomes of technological breakthroughs. Some claim a society in which its members are born free of debilitating conditions or cured of them throughout the life span must certainly be a better civilization, or at least a more humane one. In addition, technological efforts to render crops more plentiful, nutritious, and resistant to pests is proclaimed a constructive step towards moral justice, not to mention efficient use of resources. Few deny the moral obligation of providing third world nations the skills and tools to produce food. On a more superficial yet paradoxically significant level, the conveniences made possible by technology are also cause for celebration. That they free humans of otherwise labor intensive tasks and allow many to enjoy other more ‘worthwhile' endeavors, such as leisure activities, is beyond question. In fact, without many currently employed machines, humans would not be able to engage in such a wide variety of daily pursuits. Considering the individual, societal, and global advantages available through technological advances, it is not surprising many favor its continued development. Without ignoring or denying many of the mentioned benefits of technology, it is nonetheless possible to persuasively argue that its unbridled expansion can and is eliminating the need for many human activities and purposes. Ironically, while technology may solve some of humanity's ills (for example, relieving humans from tedious and laborious tasks), by doing such at an alarming pace it is also creating unanticipated and insistent problems. Consider the economic consequences of increased technological use. This trend, although allowing for undeniably greater productivity and reduced costs, gives rise to a potent social issue: mass unemployment. On a nearly daily basis one is informed of human redundancy; business is steadily replacing its human workforce with one derived from technology. It is common knowledge that in many industries, machines are adequate and oftentimes better substitutes for humans. Moreover, as machinery becomes more ubiquitous in the workplace, ‘the role of humans as the most important factor of production is bound to diminish in the same way that the role of horses in agricultural production was first diminished and then eliminated by the introduction of tractors' (Rifkin 283). The replacement of human workers with machines is not limited to a few companies or industries; it is found throughout a nation's business network. More than 75 percent of the labor force in most industrial nations engage in work that is little more than simple repetitive tasks' (Rifkin 283). Such jobs are particularly susceptible to ‘machine takeovers'. In fact, ‘automated machinery, robots, and increasingly sophisticated computers can perform many, if not most, of these jobs' (Rifkin 283). However, the unskilled labor force, particularly that in the manufacturing sector, is not the only one vulnerable to redundancy. As companies restructure their operations to include more computers and high-tech machinery, middle management positions are concurrently declining (Rifkin 284). In a recent article, The Wall Street Journal reiterates this phenomenon by claiming that ‘most of the cuts are facilitated, in one way or another, by new software programs, better computer networks and more powerful hardware that allow companies to do more with fewer workers' (Rifkin 282).
